Samsung just showcased it’s new Galaxy Gear smart watch. The watch was first revealed on the pop singing duo, Icona Pop in New York. Samsung’s CEO J.K. Shin showed the watch at the Tempodrom event venue to about 2,500 people.

The watch is a 1.63-inch, 320 x 320 pixel Super AMOLED screen, a 1.9-megapixel camera on the wristband, an 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage.

Like smartphones, the device was voice commands, allowing the user to be “hands free.” Because of this, a user can make calls from their wrist without lifting a finger. The watch also has music controls and a pedometer.

Samsung calls Galaxy Gear the “perfect companion for the Galaxy Note 3.” This means that the watch can not only be sent with the Galaxy Note 3, but is also compatible with it. No details are clear on what the this includes.

The watch will be available in six different colors: Jet Black, Mocha Gray, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, and Lime Green. They are available on September 25th, and go for $299. While it is a cool device, on smaller wrists it is a pretty big watch.

In a review, Mashable states that, “As far as the Gear’s functionality goes, let’s set one thing straight: It’s not a replacement for your cellphone. It’s a companion that connects to the phone via Bluetooth, extending its functionality and, ideally, making it less necessary to reach into your pocket for your phone.” So don’t expect to buy a smart watch and completely get rid of your phone, although I’m sure there will soon be a day when that is an option.

What do you think of the smart watch?
