Verizon Becomes the Third Company to Provide Cell Service in New York City Subways

New York City Subway

littleny /

It just became a lot easier to communicate in subway stations around New York City. As all real New Yorkers know – most underground subway stations have little or no cell phone service. This can get tricky when you are in a different part of the city and trying to find your way home, or you need to make an important call.

Verizon Wireless announced on Tuesday that its customers in New York City will be able to make calls, send texts, and use internet in 35 different subway stations throughout the city. 3G and 4G LTE data services will be available underground in various subway. Verizon has invested over $4.5 billion into the New York City region since 2000.

An initiative to enable Wi-Fi in subway systems started last year – big providers AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint signed on. Before now, T-Mobile and AT&T were the only ones available.

Not only is this great for convenience, but security as well. When users dial 911, the dispatcher will already know which underground station they are calling from.

“The build-out of the Transit Wireless network continues to progress on schedule, as we add additional carriers like Verizon Wireless and begin work on Phase Two of the project to bring service to 40 additional stations, including Grand Central Station in Manhattan, as well as all underground stations throughout Queens,” William A. Bayne Jr., CEO of Transit Wireless, said in a statement. “Our network not only provides an important security improvement to riders, but also serves as the backbone for future innovations throughout the subway system.”

The stations with service are mainly on the west side of Manhattan, from 23rd to 96th Street. This includes hot spots such as Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and Columbus Circle stations.
